Backpacking
Build a Smarter Backpacking Pantry
Simple shelf-stable ingredients that make trail meal planning less complicated.

Choose quick-cooking staples
Quick oats, instant couscous, instant rice, and noodles can help limit cooking time. Check preparation instructions before the trip and test unfamiliar ingredients at home with the same pot you plan to carry.
Build flavor in small portions
Measure spices into small labeled containers. Carry single-use portions of ingredients that become perishable after opening unless you have a reliable way to keep them cold. A little seasoning can make a familiar meal feel different on the second night.
Match food to your route
Think about the number of meals, appetite, water availability, fuel, weather, and pack space. There is no single meal quantity that works for every hiker. Pack enough for your plan and a sensible contingency if the trip runs longer.
Keep a written menu
Label each portion with the meal, water needed, and cooking instructions. Repackaging saves space only when you preserve the information you need. Keep allergen information when food will be shared.
